How Nanny Agencies Work

 Go to the beginning...

  1. Refer finalists to the family for an interview. Generally the agency will provide the family with interview guidance, as well as the results from their reference checking. The NannyNetwork.com site has a number of helpful articles on interviewing the nanny in the NannyNetwork.com Parent's Library.
  2. Collect feedback from the family after interviewing, refer more candidates if necessary, or help the family make a job offer to the candidate. The agency should be able to assist the family with salary and tax issues, or refer to nanny tax specialists in that area. HomeWork Solutions, Inc. is a nationally recognized leader in nanny payroll and tax services. The agency should also help the family write up a formal work agreement between the family and the nanny.
  3. Nanny agencies will order a background search, generally by a private investigator, after the candidate has accepted a contingent offer of employment. The family and the agency are responsible to follow the rules established by the Fair Credit Reporting Act in the ordering/processing of this pre-employment background search. The depth of the investigation varies from agency to agency - find out what it includes! At a minimum criminal records should be checked to the county level in all jurisdictions the candidate has resided and the candidate's SSN should be verified to learn all names associated with the SSN. National criminal databases, while by no means all inclusive and up to date, are a good 'wide net' approach used by many agencies to compliment an in-court county level criminal record check.
  4. Nanny agencies will collect their fee when the nanny starts work. Fees vary, ranging from $1500 - $5000. Established agencies average $2500 - $3500 as their placement fee. This is often computed as a percentage of the nanny's annual salary - 12% is standard.
  5. Client and nanny satisfaction should be checked within 1-4 weeks of employment. Nanny agencies often act as intermediaries to resolve any conflicts.
